Originally formed in the late 1960’s Raw Spirit are still going strong.
In the late 60’s a group of young, raw, spirited blues enthusiasts got together to form a band….Raw Spirit. Working the music scene along side other 60’s luminaries such as The Junco Partners, The Jasper Hart band and Sneeze, Raw Spirit became a well known fixture of the Newcastle scene. As the band’s reputation spread they regularly got to support bands such as Free, Juicy Lucy and John Hiseman’s Colloseum.
The original line up included:
- Pete Morrison (lead guitar)
- Barry Nicholls (rhythm/slide guitar)
- Keith Patterson (bass guitar)
- Bob Porteous (drums)
The spirit of change.
Over the years the band have continued to play, going through many changes of personnel and musical styles. Still going strong the current line up is:

- Jim Prior (vocal/bass guitar)
- Ian Gourlay (drums)
- John Hall (tenor sax)
- Jim Hall (trumpet)
- Jason Exley (guitar)
The current set list includes a host of blues and soul classics from artists such as Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, The Doobie Brothers, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Joe Cocker, Eddie Floyd, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears and many more.
